The Sea in Me – A Tribute to the Sea
30.3.-20.4.2025

The Sea in Me – A Tribute to the Sea is an exploration of my personal relationship and history with the sea, both for its innately entertaining and calming nature and its terrifying power. It demands respect and reminds us of who we are. Born in Aldeburgh, a small fishing village on the east coast of England, I lived literally a few hundred yards from the North Sea coast, and grew up in a deep connection to the vast, intense and restless sea. Falling asleep at night to the soft lapping and soothing whispering of the waves brought both peace and the awareness of always being at its mercy. For the past 25 years I have lived within 68 kilometres of the sea. Over the years this has left me with a growing sense of emptiness and longing, a state of nothingness, a growing and sometimes incomprehensible sense of being. I’ve never thought about these feelings, the sea has just always been in me and in my heritage.

My works are a series of visual essays. Many of them are bound in book form using traditional bookbinding techniques and materials, but where the paper and ink express something else. My visual essays consist of sculptural structures held together by forces of tension and compression. Through folded and differently arranged drawings and photographs, I intimately explore the many complexities of the sea; endless movement, familiar yet elusive, restless or peaceful, bumpy and disturbed, quiet, clear, calm, intrusive or bouncy, soft or hard, ugly or fresh, luminous or languid, disturbed, restless, deep, clean or dirty, powerful, vulnerable, fragile, and its energy. It is a life that is both threatening and enchanting.

“I think drawing has been the backbone of all my practices, whether it’s with pencil, charcoal, space, light, objects, people, air… I’m always drawing. Drawing is a way for me to think, speak, feel, express, organize, all at the same time.”
