Carbon gilding on wood
“In this context, I am interested in stamped metal because of its reflectivity. The patterns created by gluing foil do not imitate light effects like traditional painting, but are reflections of the light that exists in the space. The soot swept from smokestacks as a carbon pigment is a deep black that absorbs light.
It is somehow shocking to think that birch wood burned to heat a house during the winter ends up as soot on the walls of a chimney and then, when swept away, becomes a work of art. Soot is 98% carbon. Carbon is the element that makes all existence possible, I have about 20 kg of carbon in me. I have 0.2 mg of gold. According to Dr. MacDougall, the soul weighs 21 g.
you dress in darkness
you wrap yourself in shadows
you have traveled
a long way
you have gradually worn away
you have emerged into yourself
you merge into the forest
you turn into bark
the birds make
their nests
the deer sleep
at your feet”

Sound art performance by Ikävalko & Vuorinen & Saksman
Electronic musician and sound artist Turkka Vuorinen will perform with pianist Henri Ikävalko and singer Anna Saksman at the opening of Jarmo Kukkonen’s exhibition at the Hämeenlinna Art Hall.
