Jussi Pyky
We close our eyes to ourselves
27.5.-20.6.2023
“I am writing this on a sunny May afternoon in Helsinki’s Vuosaari. I observe the activity of ants, the nesting of birds, and the newly opened leaves of trees. They don’t seem to care about this chaos.. They don’t seem to care. Strive to survive, multiply and conquer new territories.
On the next beach, the song of the birds mixes with the noise of the traffic. On the other side of the bay you can see the masts of boats, in the distance tower cranes and apartment buildings reminiscent of anthills.
The animal figures in my works refer, among other things, to the characteristics we share with animals. These include, for example, functions in the brain related to primitive instinctual behavior and processes related to motivation and emotions.
I’m sitting in Meri-Rastila on an ancient beach rock, i.e. the devil’s field. In my mind, I imagine the seashore at this place 30 meters higher than today, where it was located 7,000 years ago.”
