PAUSE
Path. Stopping along the path. Past and present. Maybe the future somewhere in there too. A little uncertain.
I have been dealing with issues related to time and its passage, memory, memories and remembering for a long time in my art. Time passes and everything that has happened affects us – and so does how we remember it. Does recording things help things stay the same? Do they have to stay the same? Are memories our own or filtered through other stories? What is worth remembering, and what is less important to remember? What has been truly remembered? Does it matter? We are all what we have experienced, but that is not all. To some extent, our memory is also built according to what we choose to remember and what we do with what happened. What do I want to remember about this moment?
At some point, we always have to stop.
Kati Valkonen (b. 1977) lives and works in Pori and Pälkäne. Valkonen makes installations and object assemblages and paints abstract tempera paintings in layers, covering and erasing again and again. Important to Valkonen is the working process, changes, the previous layers of the painting and their effects on the final result. Valkonen deals with questions related to the mind in her work. Valkonen is a trained visual artist (YAMK) and is a member of the Finnish Painters’ Association. Valkonen’s works are in the collections of Pori Art Museum, among others.
